I feel like I was looking for a sharper cheese flavor. I might try adding some cheddar next time. I will make this again!

I have never made homemade mac and cheese but was inspired to do so by a co-worker. It is very good, though I did add a little extra cheese than it called for, as well as some celery seed. My co-worker had used celery salt, but the seed added a lot of flavor too. It will definitely become a staple recipe in my house.
My three year-old loved it! I wasn't sure about the onions, but wow, what a difference it makes! I tried this again.
I used elbow pasta like the recipe calls for and I added the onion. I was going to add mustard because I hear mustard really makes a good mac n cheese but I forgot to. I also added frozen broccoli right before putting it in the casserole dish. When I was making the cheese sauce, everything went fine until it was time to add the cheese.
I put the cheese in, I used shredded mozzeralla, and it melted but it didnt melt into the sauce, it just melted into a disgusting blob. I wasted alomst 2 cups cheese doing it! So i just decided to pour the milk onion flour mixture into the pasta and added the cheese into it letting it mely in the oven.
It was fantastic. And you know what! My mom liked it! This is wonderful! I added panko breadcrumbs to the top, which gave it a wonderful crunch! My daughter and I loved it. Creamy, and tastey. Most recipes are bland, but I think the onion's make it supper yummy. I will try it next time without, as see if it makes a difference, probally add some ham too! I had never heard of onions in mac and cheese before.

The only thing I did different was I added cheese slices on top of the mac and cheese before baking. The cheese slices get gooey and brown, which I love. Will make this again and again and again! Loved it! My 2 year old had seconds, and my husband gave it a 9 out of Mom would put it into those little aluminum pie tins and freeze them. We could fix ourselves a tasty, healthy snack anytime we were hungry.
Try dehydrated onion they are really small and most won't notice or use onion powder to get that additional depth of flavor. Loved it. Had to leave out onion because of picky husband. Also used 8 oz of cheese. Hi All. This is the basic recipe I've used for years from an old Betty Crocker cookbook.
It's what my family expects when I say I'm making macaroni and cheese. I, like a lot of you, use whatever cheese I have available and leave out the onion. There is a product that comes in a box like Velveeta that is called Deluxe American. Its by Kraft too. It's not available in my area but, I do sometimes order it. It makes this recipe even better than other types of cheese I've tried. The white American adds a bit of sharpness to the creamy Velveeta.
Good stuff! I also used a shredded Taco Cheese blend. It came out great! Will make this again! I can't imagine this without the onion. This is the mac and cheese I grew up on. This was by far the most easy and delicious recipe I have found. I did substitute a very sharp cheddar cheese and topped it with crushed corn flakes with just a drizzle of melted butter which made a nice crunch. I too find it disturbing that someone would log on here just to make derogatory remarks. If you don't like the recipe then just move on to something else.
No need to be nasty. I can't believe what I've read to this point. It is amazing how this blog has gone but here's my twist, as this is the recipe I've used for years. Add just a pinch or two of cayenne pepper and potato chips on top for crunch. I've also done a swiss cheese version and added finely chopped red or green bell peppers and the cayenne pepper. For the cholesterol patrol here's another add on bacon , cooked and crumbled along with the onion.
Mmmm, Mmmm , good! Opps, wrong product! I use colby, cheddar, Swiss and mozzarella for cheese. Somehow, Velveeta doesn't cut it for me. I sprinkle some parmesan on the top or mix with bread crumbs for a bit of crunch on top. I also make a thin white sauce which keeps the cheeses from curdling. It just takes a few minutes longer for 'real' cheese to melt in the white sauce. Macaroni and cheese is truly one of the best comfort foods there is.
As to the cholesterol, etc. You don't know that it is low fat when you eat it. This is a very good base recipe. I doctored it up a bit according to my own taste. Instead of cooked onions, I stirred in thinly sliced raw green onions and one chopped red chille pepper from my garden. Topped it with buttered bread crumbs.

I don't understand why someone would take the time to read a recipe and than complain about how bad it is. Just go on about your business. I haven't tried this yet but intend to. It sounds very good and very easy. If I was looking for a low fat low cholesterol recipe I certainly know it would probably not be a mac and cheese.
Come on people. A "review" means that you actually tried it. It does not mean that you like the picture, are thinking about trying it, or are simply bored and felt like writing some nonsense. I have to agree I add onions to almost everything but have a daughter who hates them, I dice them large enough to be found easily so she can just pick them out. I look at a lot of recipes on sites some look good but recipe sounds gross, I close it out go about my business no big deal, some I have tried cause they look really good have found a lot of new favorite recipes that way lesson of the day don't knock it til u try it.
This is just like the Mac and Cheese I grew up with, only we used cheese ends from the deli and each time the flavor was a surprise. No there is not something wrong with using real cheese - but Velveeta becomes liquid quicker than real cheese. Real cheese works fine - but has a different taste than Velveeta.
